So, after taking 2 months off for our Mexico adventure, we are back at some academia here at home. We are back into the swing of things and the kids just jumped right into their books. Our unschooling time on the road was, once again, an amazing learning experience. But, I always feel ready to hit the books, especially with my 9th grader. He’s half way through his curriculum for this year and I am pleased to say that he continues to impress me! I just want to encourage anyone who is second guessing their ability or desire to homeschool early high school grades . . . it’s actually easier in some ways than the younger years!
How, you ask, could this be possible? Well, in our case Kyler is doing 2 classes at a Homeschool class: Honor English (they are doing a Shakespeare Unit now) and Physical Science. He goes to this class once a week and the teacher gives the assignments and spends some time with the kids working on the lesson and giving a lecture. The classes are 1.5 hours each and it’s a full class, we don’t need to supplement any English or Science for the year. Also, the teacher works with the families and the parents have the final say on any and all work that needs to be done. In other words, if I feel the work is too much, not enough, too hard, too easy, I can adjust the work load. But, he has to answer to the teacher in the end of it all, so it is a win-win situation for me, the mama! Like when we were in Mexico. No sweat. We just did what I deemed possible and the teachers did not hold it against us at all. I am still homeschooling and super involved, but the student has someone else to impress, rather than just me. I find this makes him push himself a little bit more and keeps us on track and more structured at home (not my strong point!) Besides those two classes, Kyler is doing PE & Shop with his dad, Teaching Textbooks for math ~ which, by the way, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!
